There’s something about back-to-school season that has always felt like a reset.
The calendars come back out. Schedules start filling up. Everybody is figuring out where they need to be, what needs to get done and what this next season is going to require.
But this year, the reset feels different.
Maybe because life feels different.
I’m walking into a season filled with so many beautiful things—and some hard things too.
I've celebrated my bestie getting married, while still processing the loss of a loved one. I’m entering senior year with my youngest son, knowing that another chapter of motherhood is quietly coming to a close. I’m leading a business that is growing and requiring me to think more like a CEO, while still being a wife, a mom, a friend, a sister…and somewhere in all of that, remembering to take care of me.
That last part has become important.
I’m Learning That Taking Care of Me Looks Different Now
There was a time when taking care of myself meant finding an hour to work out.
Now?
Some days it looks like taking a few walks throughout the day.
It looks like choosing tea.
Stepping away from the computer.
Walking through the garden and seeing what’s still growing.
Sitting outside with my husband and giving our marriage some intentional, undivided time.
I call it equity and softness.
Time invested in the things and people I don't ever want to become too busy to nurture.
And I’m realizing that this season isn't asking me to do more.
It’s asking me to pay attention.
Not Everything Needs to Be Maximized
That can be difficult when you're a woman who wears a lot of hats.
There is always something that could be done.
Another email.
Another post.
Another project.
Another load of laundry.
Another thing for somebody else.
But I'm learning that productivity isn't the only measure of a good day.
Maybe I didn't get the hour-long workout in—but I walked three times today.
Maybe dinner wasn't elaborate—but we sat down together.
Maybe I didn't check everything off my business list—but I made the decision that will move us forward.
Maybe I spent 20 minutes in my garden doing absolutely nothing productive except noticing what was growing.
That counts too.
Senior Year Has Me Paying Attention
That after raising three boys, I'm standing at the edge of another transition.
There are still schedules, conversations, reminders, and all of the normal mom things.
But underneath them is this awareness:
This won't always look like this.
And instead of allowing that thought to make me sad, I'm trying to let it make me present.
Present for the conversations.
Present for the ordinary moments.
Present for my husband.
Present for my sons.
Present for my business.
And present for myself.
Because life doesn't always announce when something is the last time.
We hear so much about resetting our lives.
New routines.
New goals.
New habits.
New seasons.
But I'm not interested in starting over.
I've worked too hard for that.
I want to carry forward what I've learned and make room for what this season requires.
More celebrating when life gives us something beautiful to celebrate.
More attention to the woman underneath all of these titles.
Because she matters too.
And maybe that's what I'm learning most during this reset:
Taking care of myself doesn't require disappearing from the life I've built. It means making sure I'm included in it.
So yes, we're fully in back-to-school mode around here.
The calendar is filling up.
Senior year has begun.
The CEO hat is firmly on.
Marriage and motherhood still need tending.
The garden is still growing.
And so am I.
Not starting over.
Not trying to become somebody completely different.
Just continuing to understand the woman I'm becoming—and making sure she has room in the life she's worked so hard to create.
Pull up a chair, sis.
Maybe your life is resetting too.
What is this season asking you to make more room for?
I love all of this! Life is a constant evolution. Being present in the moment really resonates with me now more than ever. When I was younger, I spent so much time lamenting the present at that time and always working and waiting for something better in the future. Looking back, I now realize I missed some of the good stuff looking for… the good stuff. Now, I understand every moment is precious. Good or bad, I’m learning, growing and becoming the next version of myself and it’s all glorious.
